THE sudden death of Aarons sons doubtless servedas sufficient warning to the Israehtes to be exactand punctilious in following the religious cere-monials laid down for them. There are in the Bible manychapters of directions concerning these; and all are plannedwith forethought and justice. Thus, for instance, oneimportant principle was that the value of an offering shouldbe proportioned to the wealth of the individual whopresented it. This is illustrated in the present picture. One of thelaws was that a mother, after her child was born, shouldcome with an offering of purification, when she returnedto the tabernacle to give thanks to the Lord. The chiefoffering was to be lamb; but if the woman was poor,two turtle doves or two young pigeons would suflBce instead.We are shown here a young mother approaching withher modest gift, eager to proclaim her gratitude to thegiver of all. 11-69
