Moses went up again intoSinai, having risen higher than ever in Gods love, becausehe had been willing to perish utterly himself, but not toabandon his followers. Here upon Sinai Moses even ven-tured to pray that he might be blessed by beholding Godin His full glory. As nearly as might be, God granted himthis marvelous beatitude, yet not wholly; for there shallno man see me, and live. As God passed by in His Glory, He placed Moses in acleft of the rock and sheltered him with His hand. WhatMoses saw in that supreme moment, we know not; yetwhen he descended from the mount, with the rewrittentablets in his hand, his face so shone with the reflectedglory of that momentary vision that he seemed more thanmortal.
