Text Appearing Before Image:
^ accom-plished. Then the Lord rained upon Sodom andupon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord outof heaven. So that when Abraham looked towardthe cities, and toward all the land of the plain, andbeheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up asthe smoke of a furnace. It is this scene which the artist has presented forus. Abraham stands upon the mountain crest witharms uplifted in horror, while below him spreads thesmoke wrapped valley, the broad plain of the Jordan, with the salt sea and the dim mountains of Moabbeyond.
Text Appearing After Image:
m lot anb ?;i2i Saugfjters! AFTER THE PAINTING BY DIEGO VELASQUEZ^ THEMOST CELEBRATED OF SPANISH MASTERS. And he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daugh-ters.—Gen., 19, 30. WHAT may have been the exact character orextent of the convulsion of nature whichdestroyed Sodom and the other citiesof the plain is an open question. The Bi-ble tells US only that there fell upon them arain of brimstone and fire, a description which sug-gests some volcanic eruption such as overwhelmedPompeii. Elsewhere the Scriptures imply that atsome period the Dead Sea expanded, and spread itswaters over the vale of Siddim; but Sodom thoughnear this vale, may not have been actually within theregion engulfed. Some terrible and far-reaching convulsion theremust have been; for we find Lot at first fleeing to thelittle city of Zoar, and later dreading to remain eventhere, and fleeing up into the mountains. Here heand his daughters, stripped of all the luxury they hadknown in Sodom, were reduced to dwelling in a cave
