storian Josephus tells us that atthis time Isaac was a man of twenty-five; but theBible gives no hint of his age beyond the fact that hisattitude throughout is youthful. Abraham bound himupon the altar; and Abraham stretched forth hishand, and took the knife to slay his son. So far only did God test His servant and chosenfriend. The actual murder of Isaac was no part ofHis intent. Suddenly an angel from heaven stayedAbrahams uplifted knife, and bade him spare hisson; for now I know that thou fearest God, seeingthou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son fromme. Then close at hand Abraham saw a ram en-tangled in the bushes, and he seized the ram and slewit upon the altar as an offering instead of Isaac. Ashe did so there came to him in a voice from heavenGods final and greatest promise to him, not only thathe should be the ancestor of a mighty race, but alsothe repetition of His word to Eve, the promiseof a Saviour: And in thy seed shallall the nations of the earth be blessed. ^C^B-

Her husband, who had appar-ently been away in the southland with his flocks,came to mourn for her. He was still a wanderingstranger in this land of Canaan, possessed of no set-tled home. So from the friendly people of Hebronhe purchased land enough for a burial place for himand his family, to belong to his heirs forever. Hispurchase was a single field containing a little groveor orchard surrounding a cave, the cave of Machpelah.This was all the ground that Abraham ever person-ally owned in the land which the Lord had promisedshould belong wholly to his descendants.
