south countrytoward Hebron, a fresh blow came to him. Hisdeeply loved Rachel died, died in giving birth to asecond son, whom the father called Benjamin. Ja-cobs grief was sore, and he erected a monument toRachel. For many hundred years this pillar stoodabove her grave on the highway south of Jerusalem, near Bethlehem. When or how the ancient pillar dis-appeared we do not know; but the spot is now markedby a later memorial, an Arab mosque, itself almost athousand years of age. Jacob seems to have been thoroughly subdued bythis last blow. He was a man whose affections werefew, but very strong. We read of no more of hisclever tricks; rather we find him grown old and fee-ble, but very wise. His wisdom had taught him to begood. In his later years he was no longer called byhis early name Jacob the supplanter, but by thelater title which God had given him. Uniting hisfathers vast possessions to his own, he was Israel, the prince who prevails with God. His name isoften given to his entire race.

Andthe older ones must have feared also lest the divinebirthright and blessing would through their fatherspartiality, be passed over them to Joseph. Withthe innocence of youth, however, Joseph thoughtnothing of this. When he found some of his brothersdoing evil, he reported the matter indignantly to hisfather, and so increased their enmity. Then he dreamed two prophetic dreams, clearenough of significance, and he unwisely told
