ere were to be seven full years;let the extra harvests be taken by Pharaohs ap-pointed vizier and stored away against the time ofwant. The counsel was wise and seems to have beenwholly disinterested. Joseph could not possibly haveexpected the sudden and startling answer of Pharaoh.To understand it, we must realize that this king wasnot really an Egyptian, but the descendant of a raceof foreign conquerors, an irresponsible tyrant, thougha beneficent one, who was naturally distrustful of thenative Egyptians. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch asGod hath showed thee all this, there is none so dis-creet and wise as thou art: Thou shalt be over my house, and according untothy word shall all my people be ruled; only in thethrone will I be greater than thou. . . . And hemade him to ride in the second chariot which he had;and they cried before him. Bow the knee. . . .
