Again and again Labanchanged the form of the arrangement as to which ofthe new cattle were to be Jacobs; but always thechange worked to Jacobs advantage, the favor ofGod was with him. Laban and especially Labanssons became furious, until Jacob, watching them,knew that he must go away. He summoned his twowives secretly to him in the field, and bade themgather all his household goods. Then he himselfgathered his flocks and serving men; and in haste andsecret they all set out to return to Palestine. They made quite a caravan, for besides lesser ser-vants, Jacob had taken two wives in addition to Leahand Rachel, and he had in all, twelve sons, importantto remember because from them sprang the twelveHebrew tribes. Reuben and Simeon and Levi werethe three eldest; they were sons of Leah, andthen came her fourth and ablest, Judah.Rachel at this time had only one son,as yet a mere babe, Joseph.

When Rachel stole out of her fathers house,she carried secretly with her the images that wereher fathers. Labans unencumbered troop easily caught up withJacobs herds, and a sharp discussion followed. La-ban i^rotesting that he had always loved Jacob andmeant well by him, yet Jacob had now stolen bothhis daughters and his gods. We are told that Godappeared to Laban with a direct warning, or else hewould have attacked Jacob. The latter soothed himwith words and, denying all knowledge of his gods,bade him search for them.
