hat first punishment inflictedupon Israel. The following day Moses summoned thesubdued and shivering people, and told them the wicked-ness of their sin. He promised to secure their pardonfrom God, and indeed he had already done so. Yet Godwarned Moses that He would no longer dwell with Israelin person, for thou art a stiff necked people: lest I con-sume thee in the way. Hearing this, the- people mourned. They were afraidto venture across the wilderness unprotected by their God.So Moses entreated the Lord to stay with them, offeringhimself as a sacrifice in Israels stead. And all Israelentreated God also. At length, as Moses approachedthe tent, wherein was the altar of worship, the temporarytabernacle or house of God, the pillar of cloud which hadindicated the divine presence among them, returned sud-denly to its place before the opening of the tent. By thissign all Israel knew that their Lord had forgiven them;and all the people rose up and worshipped,every man in his tent door. 11-59
