AT LAST the preparatory work was finished,and in the middle of March, ahnost an entireyear after the departure from Egypt, came thefinal ceremony of erecting the tabernacle, Gods templein the wilderness. It must be remembered that this mar-velous structure had to be so arranged that it could all betaken down when Israel marched, and promptly set upagain wherever the tribes might camp. Therefore itstendance was an enormous task, and Moses selected fromthe tribes of Israel one entire tribe to serve in transportingthe tabernacle and its contents. The tribe so selected was naturally his own, the menwho had rallied to his side on the day of Israels desertion,the sons of Levi. Thus the I^evites became in time a setof men apart, attendants upon God, the priesthood ofIsrael. Also the Levites now took the chief part in rear-ing the tabernacle, while all the people of Israel gatheredround to celebrate the completion of the mighty work. II 64

The other implements of wor-ship were set in place, and then Moses summoned the aidof Aaron and Aarons sons. Aaron was made high priest,his sons were his helpers, and together they prepared allthings about the ark and the tabernacle for the presenceof God. The work was finished; and then, before the awestruckvision of all the people, the pillar of cloud wherein Godwas, appeared above the tabernacle, covering it and enter-ing into it. Moses and Aaron and his sons were compelledto withdraw from the tabernacle entirely, because theycould not remain alive amid the great Glory of that cloud.Thus did God make manifest His approva
