We find only one record of Gods interposing di-rectly in Isaacs affairs, as He had so often done inAbrahams. There came a year of bad crops andfamine in Palestine, and Isaac thought to do as hisfather had, and travel with his household to the fer-tile riverland of Egypt. But God prevented him,promising that he would make Palestine sufficientlyfertile, and bidding Isaac not to leave it. So Isaacobeyed and dwelt near Gerar, the southern citadel ofthe Philistines. Here his harvests prospered so amaz-ingly that all men sa^v that God was with him. Hishousehold grew so great that there was no longerroom for him in the Philistine kingdom, so he re-moved to Beersheba and established a city there.And the king of the Philistines made a formaltreaty of peace with Isaac, sayingthou art much mightier than we.

The voice is Jacobs voice, but the hands are thehands of Esau.—Gen., 27, 22. EVEN as Sarah had waited long for a child, sohad Rebekah^ Isaacs wife, to wait. At lengthtwo sons came to her at once. The elder twinwas named Esau, which means the hairy one. Theyounger was called Jacob, which means he who holdsanother by the heel; because even as he was born heclutched his brothers heel. In later years men gavean evil significance to his name, for always Jacobwas clutching others to get the better of them, sothey said his name meant the supplanter. As the elder born, Esau had first claim upon hisfathers estates and on his blessing, a blessing whichin this case meant far more than in ordinary families,since Isaac was so intimate with God. Hence Jacobenvied Esau, who valued his birthright so little thatonce he sold it to Jacob for a mess of pottage. Isaacgav
