preferred before them; they feared to losetheir share in the inheritance of Jacobs wealth. Andthe older ones must have feared also lest the divinebirthright and blessing would through their fatherspartiality, be passed over them to Joseph. Withthe innocence of youth, however, Joseph thoughtnothing of this. When he found some of his brothersdoing evil, he reported the matter indignantly to hisfather, and so increased their enmity. Then he dreamed two prophetic dreams, clearenough of significance, and he unwisely told these tohis brothers. First he dreamed that a sheaf of grainwhich he was binding, stood erect, and the sheaves ofhis brothers gathered round and swayed toward it,bowing. Next he dreamed that the sun and moonand eleven stars came and bowed to him. Even Ja-cob was indignant when Joseph told this seconddream. What is this? he said. Shall I and thymother and thy brethren indeed come to bowdown ourselves to thee to the earth?Yet the proud father treasuredH^\ the dream at heart.

And they said one to another^ Behold, thisdreamer cometh.—Gen., 37, 19. EVEN Jacob did not realize how bitter hadgrown the dislike and resentment of his oldersons toward Joseph. Hence the father him-self placed in their hands the oiDportunity and temp-tation to rid themselves of this new supplanter. The ten older brothers were feeding the flocks far tothe northward in the land they had seized from theShechemites; and Jacob bade Joseph see whetherit be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks;and bring me word again. So Joseph set forth. Reaching Shechem, he wasdirected still farther north to a field called Dothan, afair open plain which men point out even to this dayas the scene of the brethrens treachery. And whenthey saw him afar off, even before he came near untothem, they conspired against him to slay him.
