He persuaded the men ofthe city to agree to a general alliance of close friend-ship with Jacobs followers. To this covenant Jacobpretended to consent. Perhaps he really meant con-sent; but a few days later, the Shechemites being notonly off guard but ill, Simeon and Levi, two of Di-nahs brothers, with their followers, broke suddenlyinto the city, and slew all the males. Apparentlythey did no plundering but only rescued their sisterand bore her off in triumph. Then, however, camethe other sons of Jacob, eager for spoil, andtook everything within the city, evencarrying off the women and chil-dren as slaves.

To the end of his life heremembered this outbreak of Simeon and Levi, andblamed them bitterly.
