The offering was to be made on Mount Mo-riah, at the end of a three days journey from Abra-hams southern home. INIount ISIoriah is supposed to have been on thesite of Jerusalem, the very spot where Solomon af-terward built his temple, where Jesus preached, andwhere the Jews worship to this day—the chief altarof the world. In the picture, the artist endeavors toreconstruct the holy hillside as it may have appearedin those old days, before Jerusalem existed. And Abraham rose up early in the morning, andsaddled his ass. To Sarah, the lads devoted mother,he apparently said nothing. WTiat could he say?He set out almost secretly with Isaac and two at-tendants. When on the third day he reached thefoot of Moriah, he dismissed the attendants, placedon young Isaacs shoulders the wood for the fire,and, accompanied only by the boy, beganthe slow ascent, despairing of heart butif^A still obedient.
