Description

Monday afternoon and Thetford gives me a warm sunny welcome but strong winds caused the train journey to be extended via Ely, delays on the York - Peterborough leg meant I missed a connection, not too bad as only half-an-hour was added to my travel time. My route being bus to Darlington then trains to York, Peterborough, Ely and Theford. From Thetford to the start of the Peddars Way & Norfolk Coast Path is almost ten miles with no public transport options but I hitched a lift and reached the car park at Knettishall in less than an hour from arriving in Thetford. Everything looking good.

In 1972-4 I was a sales rep for a hosiery company and worked the East Anglian counties, living at that time in a small village called Sutton six miles north of Ely, so this walk is taking me back to places I once knew quite well but have not seen for what, more than 35 years! The Bell Inn, I remember with affection, as I stayed here occasionally when working this area. In those far-off days East Anglia was known as "the graveyard territory" among sales reps,( a job-title which falls short of doing justice to the nobility of the calling it so inadequately describes)! I preferred to think of myself more as a peripitetic creative agent of exchange! I did well enough in Cambridgeshire/Norfolk/Suffolk and the Home counties but was not sorry to move on, for as Noel Coward pointed out its very flat. Still my next move to London hardly improved access to wild and high places, magnets then, and now.
