Description

The Florence Baptistery, also known as Baptistry of Saint John (Battistero di San Giovanni) is one of the oldest buildings in Florence constructed between 1059 and 1128. Located in Piazza del Duomo and Piazza San Giovanni across from Florence Cathedral it has the status of a minor basilica of the Catholic Church. Its origins are unknown although it is believed that it was built over the ruins of a Roman temple dedicated to Mars dating back to the 4th-5th century A.D. The Italian poet Dante Alighieri and many other notable Renaissance figures, including members of the Medici family, were baptised in this baptistery.
