English: A Bactrian species of double humped Camel (Camelus bactrianus) in the deserts of Nubra Valley, near Hunger village, Ladakh.
The Bactrian camel is a large, even-toed species of camel native to the steppes of Central Asia. The Bactrian camel has two humps on its back in contrast to the single-humped camels in the Thar desert and other deserts of Middle-East.Their species name is derived from the ancient historical region of Bactria. They are quite resilient to cold, drought, and high altitudes. A small number of feral Bactrian camels still roam the Mangystau Province of southwest Kazakhstan and the Nubra Valley in India. It is in Nubra Valley, Ladakh, where they are predominantly in domesticated for jolly camel rides for tourists in the white sand deserts located at an altitude of more than 10,000 feet above Mean Sea Level.
