(d) Glaciers of the third order, residualbranches of tbose of the second, separated andmade independent by the melting away of thetrunks to which they belonged. Nearly all theglaciers of the world are now of this order. Distribution of Glaciers.— Most of the gla-ciers of North America are distributed alongthe mountain ranges of the Pacific coast betweenlat. 36° 30 and 36°. About 65 small residualglaciers a mile or less long still linger on theSierra Nevada of California between lat. ,36° 30and .38°, at an elevation of 11,000 to 12,000 feetabove sea-level. Groups of larger glaciers drainthe snow-fields of Mount Shasta and the highvolcanic mountains of the Cascade Range inOregon and Washington. From ice-crownedMount Rainier, 14.600 feet high, eight glaciers,5 to 10 miles long, descend into the forests towithin 3,000 and 4,000 feet of sea-level. The GLACIERS.

To the north of lat.61° the glaciers gradually diminish in size toabout lat. 62° 30 or 63°. Beyond this, to thenorth end of the continent, few if any glaciersnow exist, the ground being comparatively lowand the snowfall light. Glaciers of the third order, a mile or two to15 or 20 miles long, fill the uppen canons andhollows of the highest region in countless thou-sands.
