aster orwood — nothing that shows how the Greek drewwith a free hand — we can only reason back-ward from the firm and resolute setting down oflines drawn on the resistant material with thesharp point, and infer the vigor and daring ofthe more imfettered design. Sculpture in its different forms is, after all,that which Greece has left us which is most im-portant. \\e have the marble reliefs carvedupon temples, tombs, and the walls of sacredenclosures, and also a great number of slabswhich, when more than two or three feet ineither dimension are generally tombstones, butwhich, when small, are frequently mere recordscarved upon a boundary stone or a memorial, orelse a votive slab dedicated at the shrine ofsome divinity. In all of these the propriety andthe freedom of design are wonderful and. in re-lief sculpture at least, the Greeks have set anexample which has never been e<iualled since,neither in th* actual beauty of the form nor inthe intelligence shown in the composition.
