In Ohio there are over 10,000 ofthese mounds, of varied shapes and sizes.One of special interest is in the form of ahuge serpent. Ohio is a close rival of Virginia as aMother of Presidents. Six Presidentswere natives of the state—Grant, Hayes,Garfield, Benjamin Harrison, McKinleyand Tgft. The first Methodist mission in the UnitedStates was established in 1819 at Marietta,which is reputed to be the oldest settle-ment in the state. In 1917 the Ohio legislature passed alaw permitting wonien to vote for Presi-dential electors, but the law was rejectedat a popular election. The state as a whole has no bonded debt. About fifty-six per cent of the peoplelive in towns and cities. Ohio abolished capital punishment in1912. The state flower is the carnation.
