Text Appearing Before Image:
ifty species of our wild birdsoccur here during the autumnal and vernal migrations. For many summers past we have tramped together over thismost interesting country, and the time is now near at handwhen we can commence the early spring excursions, which are,as a rule, apart from the exercise they afford, undertaken al-most wholly for the purpose of securing negatives of the trees, shrubs, and wildflowers of this region. Figure i.Illustrating article Field Botany and the Camera/ by R. W. Shufeldt, M. D. 91 familiar with general botany in order to be able to select themost desirable subjects of any species to which he intends tophotographically devote himself. So desirous is it of enjoying thevery first warm rays of the sun in March that, in the pine andoak-woods where it is most abundant, it forces its way throughthe dry and dead leaves that fell the year before, and now covertile ground where they have kept these purple beauties warmall winter. A beautiful example of this violet is here shown in FigureI illustrating this article. I obtained it just after itsemergence from among the dead oak and chestnut leave
