(Solidago) in Maryland that Ihave ever seen in my life. Many Monarchs were restinghere and there on the flower-tops of these elegant Golden-rods,to the number of three or four, in some instances, on each.Having, with my wife, enjoyed the sight for awhile, I caughta couple of the handsomest specimens with my fingers, placingeach separately in envelopes I carried for the purpose. Nextday, in my study, they were in exactly as perfect a conditionas when taken, and fully as vigorous. Fastening a piece ofthe Golden-rod in front of a white sheet of blotting-paper, Ifocussed it on the ground-glass of a 5x8 camera, with a stopnext to the full opening. Then, very gently and very adroitlyI induced the two butterflies to rest upon it in such a way thatthe sides of their wings were practically parallel to the planeof the ground-glass.
