Text Appearing Before Image:
MARTHA WASHINGTON. From Daguerreotype of Miniature. J. A. ANDERSON. made on it, the Daguerreotype is unique, in that eachrepresents a separate sitting. The amateur may well spend an occasional hour in makingnegatives from these beautiful productions of early photo-graphic art, for the better preservation of what they portrayand for the pleasure of sharing with friends, the product ofhis skill. The Daguerreotype to be copied must be taken from its caseand the glass cover removed. Otherwise the result would bemarred by reflections from and refraction by the glass and byfog and specks sometimes found on its under side, which areoften taken for defects in the plate. 60
Text Appearing After Image:
GENERAL WASHINGTON. From Daguerreotype of Painting. A. ANDERSON. On the plate spots and other defects are often found whichhave arisen from atmospheric influences or from carelessnessin production or in subsequent handling. Some of thesedefects may be removed by experts but, as a rule, the remedymust be found in corrections on the negative or print ofthe copy. To remove the picture from the case, in which it is simplyheld by pressure, take the case in the right hand and tapit smartly, face down, in the hollow of the left hand. Two orthree taps will usually bring it out. Handle the plate with extreme care. Nothing whatevermust be allowed to touch the delicate surface. A touch of 6i the finger, or a drop of water from the mouth, in attemptingto blow off dust, or the least scratch, will make a mark whichthe unskilled operator cannot remove. Sometimes the adhesive paper, by which the plate was boundto mat and cover, is found to have separated from the metal,in which case care must be used
