Description |
English: The 'Grosser Kurfürst' and other units of the High Seas Fleet sailing to surrender, 21 November 1918 Inscribed 'Grosse Kerfurst' (sic) and signed by the artist, lower right. The ship on the right is the German battleship 'Grosser Kurfürst', built at Hamburg, launched on 5 May 1913 and completed in September 1914. She surrendered as part of the German High Seas fleet in the Firth of Forth on 21 November 1918 and was transferred to Scapa Flow on the 26th. After being scuttled by her crew with the rest of the interned fleet on 21 June 1919, she was raised on 29 April 1938 and scrapped at Rosyth. The large ship on the left is one of the German 'Kaiser'-class battleships. The two three-funnelled ships in the centre are German cruisers - either the 'Karlsruhe', 'Emden', 'Nürnberg', 'Cöln' or 'Dresden'. |
