rt is a hollow muscular organ through which the bloodpasses, placed behind the sternum and just above the central tendonof the diaphragm. It is shaped like a cone, about five inches long and three andone-half inches wide, with the base turned upward toward the rightshoulder and the apex pointing downward toward the left side.It is composed of several layers of muscle fibers which are peculiar,being involuntary and at the same time striped. The cavity of the heart is divided by a septum into right and leftportions, and as it lies in the body the right heart is nearly in frontof the left. Each side consists of two chambers, an auricle (atrium)and a ventricle (ventriculum) (Fig. 114).
