Description
Mastitis is the most prevalent infectious disease of lactating cows and is responsible for important losses in the dairy industry globally. A wide variety of microorganisms have been implicated as causative agents of bovine mastitis including bacteria, fungi, and even algae. Rapid detection of mastitis, most often under the form of symptomless, subclinical infection, relies upon screening of milk samples by using Califronia Mastitis Test (CMT), a simple and fast cow-side assay that crudely estimates the somatic cells of milk, mainly leukocytes, whose number is strongly increased during an inflammatory process of the udder.
