| Description |
English: In 1921, the National Park Service began work on the Carbon River road into Mount Rainier National Park. This six-mile dirt road was originally intended as part of a ring of roads which would circle the park, but the plan was never completed. This photo, taken sometime in the 1920s, shows a car at the National Park Service's checking station at Carbon River. People entering the park at this point signed in and out at the station. More permanent structures later replaced the temporary canvas-roofed building. Written on negative: Carbon River checking station
