Summary[edit]
DescriptionTempo Restaurant - fmr Myron Crittenden House, Yianni's Authentic Greek Cuisine, Biac's World Bistro et al. - Buffalo, New York - 20201208.jpg |
English: Tempo Restaurant, 581 Delaware Avenue, Buffalo, New York, December 2020. A textbook example of the Italian Villa residential style (and one of relatively few such houses in the city with its rooftop cupola intact), the building showcases such classic stylistic hallmarks as a shallow-pitched hip roof with eaves undergirded by modillions, a dentil course, and a row of unusual, roughly elliptical attic windows, as well as round-arched windows on the second floor and side elevations contrasting with a segmental-arched front entrance fixed centrally on a slightly projecting portion of the façade. Originally a private residence, the building was owned for the initial part of its history by Myron Crittenden (1823-1903), a Massachusetts-born grain and produce merchant with an office at the Central Wharf and later at the Board of Trade Building. He lived there from the house's completion in 1874 until about 1888. For the past decades it has served almost continuously as a restaurant; a 1994 Buffalo News writeup of the building's architectural legacy noted that by that point it had already passed through the hands of several establishments, including most prominently Yianni's Authentic Greek Cuisine (1972-1992) and Biac's World Bistro (opened 1992 and still in business at the time the article was written; it would close in 2001). Most recently it has served as home to Italian-flavored fine dining destination Tempo, which as of the time the photo was taken was "on hiatus" due to the COVID-19 pandemic with plans to reopen "when the business climate is right". |
