Summary[edit]

Description
English: Tchufute Kalei literally means "The Fortress of the Jews." It is one of 8 Crimean cave cities. Jews and later Karaim lived here. The Khazars lived here, possibly including those who converted to Judaism (see KUZARI.) Included here are an ancient cemetery (dating back at least 500 years,) 2 "knassas" (Beis Knesses in Hebrew), and numerous large and small caves. In one of the larger caves, there appear to be 2 mikvaos (ritual baths). During recent construction done by a church, another separate cave with 2 mikvaos was filled with cement. In the knassas, visible are women's balconies and arks for the Torahs. Unfortunately, due to recent remodeling, the original decor has been somewhat changed. A short walk from the rear gate of the city is the Jewish cemetery. Due to lying on an earthquake zone, many of the stones have fallen over, but being in a forest, the words on them have been protected from the elements.
