Tartinis Traum / Tartini's dream
Object type painting Edit this at Wikidata
Description
According to Tartini, he dreamed that he had a pact with the devil. In this dream Satan played a sonata of such arresting beauty and difficulty, that, when he woke up, he tried to play the piece as good as he could remember. Although his memory was only very faulty, he wrote down what he could remember and in so doing made his best sonata, then and there in his monk's cell. This story is the beginning of the legend of the' Devil's Trill', a topos among violinists.
