| Description |
This is the valley in which Fairbanks and the surrounding area lies, as seen from the upper part of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. On the distant horizon is Denali National Park -- over 120 miles away. At the left side of the photograph is Fairbanks' downtown, such as it is. The house where I live is about a third of the way from the left edge, somewhere down there. You can barely make out Mt. McKinley (Denali), which is a lower-appearing hump-shaped mountain about 2/3 of the way from the left edge of the photograph. The sharp-looking mountains at the left end of the mountain range on the horizon are Mount Deborah and Mount Hayes (I think). Both are nearly six thousand feet lower than Denali, which should tell you how far away it is from this photograph. |
