Go back and do my command.Throw the sword, and spare not. But again Sir Bedivere could not bring him-self to throw the sword away. Instead, he againhid the sword, and returned to the King to tellhim he had seen nothing but the waves and thegloom. Traitor! cried the King, twice you havedeceived me. If you do not my bidding thistime, I will slay you, wounded as I am. Then Sir Bedivere was ashamed, and takingthe sword, he swung it back and fore, and, withthe impulse thus gathered, it cut its way throughthe gloom to the middle of the water. As it flew through the air, a hand and armrose from the waves, and caught it by the hilt.

And whenthey stood upon the bank, a little barge drewnear, containing a Queen and many fair ladies,all in black hoods. When they beheld KingArthur, they shrieked and wept. ^ Now place me in the barge, said KingArthur, and Sir Bedivere put him softly down,and the ladies moaned and wept round him,while the barge moved slowly away from theshore. THE END OF IT ALL Part III When Queen Guenevere heard of the battle,and of the death of King Arthur, she stole awaywith five of her ladies to Almesbury, and becamea nun. Meanwhile Sir Lancelot, who had receivedSir Gawaines letter, and heard that Sir Mordred TEE END OF IT ALL, 161 had taken the crown, rose in wrath,
