Summary[edit]

Description
English: The taiga flycatcher, also known as the red-throated flycatcher, is a migratory bird belonging to the family Muscicapidae. Initially documented by Peter Simon Pallas in 1811, this small brown flycatcher exhibits distinctive features, including a black-and-white tail that sharply contrasts with its brown upper parts. The female is characterized by buffish breast feathers and mostly white underparts.

In the breeding season, the male taiga flycatcher presents an orange throat patch surrounded by a faint gray wash. In its non-breeding phase, the male displays darker flanks and reduced orange coloring on the throat. The female, on the other hand, exhibits a cold brown upper plumage and dirty-white underparts. It's important to distinguish it from the red-breasted flycatcher, with specific features such as the restricted orange patch and gray throat wash in the breeding male of the taiga flycatcher.

Apart from visual distinctions, the taiga flycatcher's vocalizations set it apart. Its more complex song is composed of whistles, trills, and a dry trill that is faster than that of the red-breasted flycatcher. This species predominantly breeds in forested areas, favoring coniferous and mixed deciduous tracts with clearings and waterways. During winters, the taiga flycatcher can be found in various wooded or shrubby habitats.
