Summary[edit]

Description

Norstead, L'Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland. This type of ship, which in the Old Norse language is called a "knarr", is what the Vikings are said to have used in their trans-Atlantic voyages to Iceland, Greenland, and ultimately Vinland. This knarr is named the Snorri, in honour of Snorri Thorfinnsson, the first European child born in North America (some time between the years 1005 and 1013). It was built in 1997 by a group of men who set out to recreate Leif Erikson's voyage from Greenland to Newfoundland using only medieval-era ships, tools, and navigational aids. After they succeeded on their second attempt, they donated the Snorri to Norstead, where it remains.

Norstead, L'Anse-aux-Meadows, Terre-Neuve.
