Summary[edit]

Description

Downtown, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. The Quaker House is the oldest building in Dartmouth, dating to 1785. William Ray, its owner, was a Quaker (as the name of the house implies) and a United Empire Loyalist. A whaler by trade, Ray was driven away from his home in Nantucket by the combined effects of the physical and economic devastation of the American Revolution and the high taxes placed after the war on American whale oil by the British as a punitive measure. Spared from the wave of urban renewal that claimed many old buildings in downtown Dartmouth in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Quaker House is now open for tours under the auspices of the Dartmouth Heritage Museum.

Centro, Dartmouth, Nueva Escocia.
