Description
English: Située sur une île du plus grand lac de Turquie, Akdamar fut une des plus anciennes capitales de l'Arménie. Elle a été construite entre 915 et 921. Elle a été la Résidence du Catholicos d'Arménie jusqu'en 1895. En 1915 beaucoup de bâtiments du monastère ont été détruits et seule l'église a subsité. Le site a été interdit aux étrangers jusque dans les années 60. Depuis 2005 elle a été restaurée et inaugurée en 2007. C'est maintenant un Musée. Une seule messe est autorisée par an.

Elle est sur la Liste indicative de l'UNESCO (2015) La facade Est. Chaque façade est dédiée à un Evangéliste représenté an haut. Ici il s'agit de Jean.

En dessous une frise avec des représentations de fruits (grenade, raisin), d'animaux (lapin, cheval, lion).
