Summary[edit]

Description
English: TREATY OF LANCASTER – FRANKLIN, Benjamin, printer. A Treaty, Held at the Town of Lancaster, in Pennsylvania, By the Honourable the Lieutenant-Governor of the Province, And the Honourable the commissioners for Provinces of Virginia and Maryland with the Indians of the Six Nations, In June 1744. Philadelphia: B. Franklin, 1744.

The Six Nations cede control of the Shenandoah Valley. George Thomas, Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania, presided over the June 1744 proceedings attended by representatives from both Virginia and Maryland as well as those from the Seneca, Onondaga, Oneida, Cayuga and Tuscarora (the Mohawk noticeably absent), convened following skirmishes with encroaching European settlers in the Shenandoah Valley. After Governor Gooch of Virginia threatened to go to war, the Six Nations agreed to cede control of the region, opening the region up to European settlement and land speculation. This is the third of a total of thirteen treaties with Native Americans printed by Franklin. Miller 364; Evans 5416.

Folio (315 x 190mm). Formerly bound in a larger volume, manuscript marginalia summarizing various portions of the text. (Occasional foxing and some edge wear to pages.)
