The review: The power of 1 message and voice: 1 MC to pilot the show. Instead, there were 5 public-facing coordinators/MCs, some better than others at introducing presenters and ideas. 2nd rule: MCs cannot be one of the featured speakers. 2 out of 5 stars for presenting 5 stars for coordinating the event (no small task and it went surprisingly smoothly) CollectiveNext had an artist working on stage, seemingly sketching the talk ideas on a poster in real time. But it wasn't a real-time drawing session... they had already sketched out in pencil the poster but were just outlining it with thick markers during the 20 minute talk. Bizarre. Fake "real-time" artistry, with their back to the audience, and distracting us from concentrating on the speaker. Lovely posters once they were finished. Full disclosure: I've hired CollectiveNext to create fantastic idea jams like <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/juhansonin/3093096757/">this</a>. Overall, I love their work. 2 stars Food/drink Relatively healthy. Lots of green stuff! 4 stars Dave McLaughlin Starting the day off with a company pitch hurts. And the presentation was a mess after a great 2nd line involving Hugh Hefner. 1 star just for showing up Susan Avery Too much of an overview of the warming "crisis". Get into a particular, detailed, crazy aspect and tell us that story. 2 stars Alex Bok Company pitches are gag-worthy. And this could've been tasty since it was all about battery tech. Felt like he was briefing his VC brother-in-law over a BBQ. 1 star Felice Frankel Lovely visual stories to expose complex science/ideas... she could've honed the presentation and her own pitch to be really powerful. 3 stars Ann Christensen Rough position filling in for an ailing parent. 4 stars for bravery. Mary Gunn Social edu program done good. More hard data. 3 stars John Harthorne Cheeze-fest presentation but worthy cause. 2 stars Cesar Hidalgo Needed more hard science than generalities. Too cute by half. 3 stars Eric Mongeon Need to be darker, scarier, + more depressing a talk if Poe was the central theme. Stunning work. 3.5 stars Sapir Ng Crazy fun idea of the underground theater space but some of the worst architectural and space renderings to get the ideas across. And oh yea, it's just photoshopped/sketchup'ed pictures. Nothing real. 1.5 stars John Werner + MacCalvin Romain Fun, saccharine shtick. 2.5 stars Seth Priebatsch Energetic + timely rant on game mechanics embedded in our species. 4 of 7 recipes to make gaming services = spot on. The pitch needed the touch of a lady... aka it was a boy-centric gaming view (leveling up as critical for example). But not revealing the last few tenets because Seth wanted "to keep a competitive advantage" for his company was a cop-out... and anti-TED philosophy. 3.5 stars Static Noyze Huge fan of SYTYCD. Fun routine. 3 stars Frank Reynolds Mind numbing story (in a freakishly amazing way). Took the audience on a ride of recovery... could've been amplified 2db by having a Lessig-like powerpoint deck and more importantly, not reminding the audience throughout the talk that he's going public and actually announcing the stock name. 3 stars Bill Staby Another company pitch... and a bad one. Didn't see his water power device until 3/4 of the way through the presentation. No total ownership cost + performance data. 1 star Larry Lessig Shazam! Now that's the model of how to present and tell a story. Gave a similar pitch 2 weeks ago in South Carolina. He's the only one who could compete with Clay Shirky's youtube'ed presentation. Proof is in the pudding: the Fair Elections bill is not gaining speed. Yet. 5 stars Bill Walczak Smart storytelling on how to take a system engineering view on community building. Edu + health = breaking the cultural despair. 4.5 stars ......... overall experience rating: 3 out of 5 stars ........ I'd do it again in a heartbeat. |
