The points of the compass are an example of rotational symmetry. This photograph shows a compass on a map of Italy

Summary[edit]

Description
English: The points of the compass as marked on a compass rose are an example of rotational symmetry. The rose is first divided in 1/4s - North, South, East, West, (N, S, E, W), then into 1/8ths North-East (NE), South-West (SW), etc. and then again into 16ths, NNE (North-North-East), etc. The traditional mariner's compass takes this one step further by dividing the rose into 1/32nds, North, North by East (NbE), North-North-East, etc.
