DescriptionSymmetry, Wilfred Owen memorial - geograph.org.uk - 1071597.jpg |
English: Symmetry: Wilfred Owen memorial The famous Great War poet Wilfred Owen lived close to Shrewsbury Abbey. He was killed in the war on 4 November 1918 - a week before the Armistice. He has been honoured in his home town by this memorial, "Symmetry" by Paul de Monchaux, unveiled on 12 June 1993. On it is inscribed the first line of Owen's poem "Strange Meeting": "I am the enemy you killed, my friend". the form of the memorial symbolises the shallow tunnel in which Owen imagines the dead soldiers meeting in the afterlife. |
