Sydney ferry KAI KAI in Lavender Bay circa 1922

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Sydney ferry KAI KAI in Lavender Bay circa 1922. David Critchley commentary: "A Postcard in my collection. A Rose Series photo postcard No. P.6426. Postmarked 21 November 1928.

Sydney, Lavender Bay c1922. The Ferry 'Kai Kai', launched in 1906, stands at Lavender Bay wharf on Sydney's North Shore in the early 1920's. Although this wharf is the closest to North Sydney, access is only via a steep road/walking track unsuitable for trams and especially to road vehicles of the day. Thus the wharf did not see as much ferry traffic as either Milson's Point or McMahon's Point wharves which were accessed by easier grades. The wharf did find fame however as setting for the 1976 Little River Band/Glenn Shorrock song "The Long Jumping Jeweller of Lavender Bay", who, running late each morning for his job in the city would run head long down the grade before hurling himself at the departing ferry. Each day the distance would get further and further until the one day when he missed. "I'm gonna let my heart take me away, I'm gonna jump a little further everyday, I'm gonna let my heart take me away,

I'm the long jumping jeweller of Lavender Bay."
