Title |
swyor-c39b45 medieval papal bulla |
||
Description |
English: A fragment from a Medieval lead alloy papal bulla. The fragment has a hole in the top of it level with the border. About a third of the bulla survives, with the two edges missing. The inscription which survives is: GRE[]/[]RI[]/ [] II[]. The bulla was issued by one of the Popes called Gregory, the most likely possibilities being St. Gregory VII (1073-85), Gregory VIII (1187),and Gregory IX (1227-41). The latter is the most likely. On the other face, part of the beaded outlines round the images of Saint Paul and saint Peter can be seen. A clear and complete example of the same design is SF-75C3F8. The lead is cream coloured. It has a length of 38.73mm, width 17.41mm, thickness 3.44mm, weight 18.06g. Other examples of Pope Gregory IX are NARC-61E663 and YORYM-006C94. |
