Summary[edit]

Description
English: Ground Penetrating Radar experiments to map out the internal structure of this 30m barchan desert dune.

This picture was taking as part of a 5-day field campaign to several dry desert sand dunes in Qatar, forming part of a collaboration with colleages from the UK, US and Qatar.

We conducted a survey with a 1200 MHz Ground Penetrating Radar system on the steep (angle = 30 degrees) slope of a large barchan dune. The sand on this slope is piled up due to subsequent avalanches, originating from the crest of the dune as the wind blows fiercely. Cables are running down the dune from the flag on the top-right in the image to the batteries at the bottom-left. The PhD-student navigates the radar slowly downhill as it collects our data.

The resulting data reveal the fine structure of the layers of sand that are hidden beneath the surface. Due to ideal conditions, we are able to "see" to a depth of ~5 meters, with an resolution of between 5 - 10 cm. To our knowledge, no-one has ever performed such a high-resolution GPR survey before on dry desert dunes.
