Summary[edit]

Description

This national monument features a volcano that had erupted less than 1,000 years ago - a baby as far as volcanoes go.

Volcanic soil can often be conducive to good vegetation growth, as is the case in Hawaii; but here in northern Arizona, it is too dry and cold, so volcanic soil, despite being rich in nutrients, cannot hold moisture well, and therefore actually stunts plant growth. Cone pine trees here are shorter than their counterparts elsewhere in this area.

All mountains in the vicinity of Flagstaff, including the key landmark San Francisco Peaks, are volcanic in origin. The active volcanic hotspot continues to slowly drift east.
