Description

sulfur crystals in fumarole on Vulcano, Lipari Islands, Italy

Fragile dendritic crystals of native sulfur form continuously by direct crystallization from sulfur vapor in fumaroles located at the top of Vulcano, the eponymous volcano named for Vulcan, Roman god of fire or smithery. The volcano is located on the island of Vulcano in the Lipari Islands about 20 km north of the island of Sicily.
