DescriptionSukkot in Union Square.jpg |
Ah, it's that time of year again: Sukkot! I am not Jewish, but if I were, this would be my favorite holiday--seven days of eating every meal in a fort in your yard at harvest time. Or, if you live in New York City, a fort in Union Square (or outside your local deli). Gentile readers of the Old Testament might be more familiar with its English name, the Feast of Booths. Regardless, it seems like a jolly time, with none of that fasting and atoning business. The people in this picture are members of the controversial Chabad movement of Hasidic Judaism. Some Chabadniks believe that their late rebbe, Menachem Mendel Schneerson, was the messiah. Others do not. This has led to something of a schism, which I do not pretend to understand, but which seems to be just one more example of religion dividing instead of uniting. I still love the sukkah though. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sukkot |
