Description A painting from Essentials of the Pharmacopoeia Ranked According to Nature and Efficacy; Imperially Commissioned, a Chinese Ming Dynasty book written in 1505 and edited by Liu Wentai for the Imperial Library of the Ming court. The picture shows the process of sublimation of calomel, or mercurous chloride. The man on th left is shown brushing the crystals from the sublimation lid by using a feather. This same process was used for the collection of crystals from human sex and pituitary hormones from human urine.
