Original caption
Street Scene: the approach to the Sixteenth Street Bridge from the Pittsburgh side. The bridge led from Mechanic Street, later changed to 16th Street (seen here), to Chestnut Street on the North Side. Just visible in the far distance, the original bridge was a covered wooden structure built in 1837, burned and rebuilt in 1851, partly washed away and rebuilt in 1865, and finally burned in 1918. The present Sixteenth Street Bridge was built in 1923. (see Kidney, Walter, Pittsburgh's Bridges, Architecture and Engineering. Pittsburgh: Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation, 1999. Pages 152-154).
