Ricordi delle legioni, delle coorti, squadre e centurie edificatrici del Vallo (Druce). Cap. IV.) ANFITEATRI, BAGNI, TEMPLI ED ALTARI NEL VALLO. 651 Tutta la regione del vallo ora e per molti anni in appresso è popolata da gente varia di luoghi, di lingue e costumi. Vi sono Italiani, Galli, Batavi, Frisii, Germani, Daci, Pannoni, Dalmati, Reti, Traci, Ispani, Mauritani, Hamii di Siria. All'intorno ferocia e barbarie. Qui per opera degli ordini e della potenza di Roma sorge una nuova civiltà di cui rimangono dappertutto i vestigi. I soldati romani che con tutti gli aiuti dellade lavorano alla edificazione del forte propugnacolo vi lasciano numerose memorie di loro gusti, e pensieri, e amori e credenze. Alle stazioni di Cilurno (Chesters) e di Borcovicio (Hoii-sesteads) sono tracce di anfiteatri: in molti luoghi frequentissime le rovine di edificii di bagni, di acquidotti, di ponti, di ville, di templi. Rimangono 140 altari, tra cui alcuni egregiamente scolpiti, coi nomi dei duci e soldati
