Summary[edit]

Description

San Francisco's Chinese population dates back all the way to the 1840s Gold Rush. The Chinese have been an integral part of San Francisco's social fabric ever since, despite severe backlash from the rest of the society that persisted well into the 1960s.

Stockton Street, seen here, is the heart of "living" Chinatown, where new immigrants, as well as more established immigrants now settled in the suburbs, come to do grocery shopping and eat native food. Many community organizations are located here as well.

Grant Avenue, a block to the east, is the touristy Chinatown that most non-Chinese people and out-of-towners visit.

I walked only a block from North Beach and its Italian atmosphere, but things couldn't be any more different here.
