This area of Farmingdale was once home to several pickle factories, dating back to the late 1800’s. Farmers grew cucumbers and cabbage in the surrounding fields, to be made into pickles and sauerkraut. The last remaining factory was Stern’s Pickle Works, a well-known local landmark for almost 100 years. Founded in 1888, the business was sold in 1894 to Aaron Stern, an Austrian Jewish immigrant who started his career selling pickles from a pushcart in Brooklyn. It remained in the Stern family for three generations. Over the years, the company expanded, adding more pickled products, such as peppers, tomatoes, onions and cauliflower, as well as other specialty items including olives, mustard, ketchup and jams. The original red barn-like factory building stood close to this spot on Powell Place until 1985, when the land was sold off to developers and new homes were built on the property. The nearby cul-de-sac was named Sterns Court in honor of its history.
